The Sorel Medallion Choral Composition Contest 2012-2013
2012-2013 Winners in the Choral Medallion Competition
The Sorel Medallion in Choral Composition honored it's 2013 winners to a full capacity crowd at Church of the Ascension, on April 18th, 2013. Composers from left to right were, Melinda Bargreen, 2nd place winner, with her composition "Stella Splendens"; Sheena Phillips, 3rd place winner, with her composition "Circle of Life"; Stacy Garrop, 1st place winner, with her "Love's Philosophy." All three pieces were presented with a work commissioned for Voices of Ascension, "The Bird Mound," by composer Eve Beglarian.
Voices of Ascension programmed these works as part of it's subscription series. The program was entitled "Great Choruses." The Sorel winners were programmed along with Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Vaughn Williams, and Ives. WQXR's Jeff Spurgeon expressed the importance of new works, not only from male composers, but also women composers, and then presented their awards.
The next Medallion in Choral Composition will be restricted to Shakespearean text only. The deadline will be extended to December 31st, 2015.
