Announcing the 2010-2011 Sorel Medallion
Choral Composition Contest Winners
The 2011 Sorel Medallion in Choral Composition Winners:
Dorothy Frisch, Marilyn Shrude, and Dobrinka Tabakova.
The Winner's concert will be June 8th, at 8:00 p.m. at
Church of The Ascension, 5th Avenue and 10th street, New
York, New York.

Dorothy VanAndel Frisch
Composer, singer, organist, and pianist Dorothy VanAndel Frisch
believes strongly that music is a gift for people of all ages and abilities.
In addition to writing music for singers of all ages (preschoolers through
adults) and for the usual church groups and instruments (children's
choir, adult choir, handbell choir, organ, and piano), Dorothy has
specialized in composing and arranging music for unusual combinations

Marilyn Shrude
Composer Marilyn Shrude is known for her warm, lyrical music, highly linear and multi-layered with timbral contrasts that result in a bright, shimmering and delicately wrought sound world. She received degrees from Alverno College and Northwestern University, where she studied with Alan Stout and M. William Karlins. Among her more prestigious honors are those from the Guggenheim Foundation (2011 Fellow), American Academy of Arts and Letters, Rockefeller Foundation, Chamber Music America/ASCAP, Meet the Composer, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She was the first woman to receive the Kennedy Center Friedheim Awards for Orchestral Music (1984) and the Cleveland Arts Prize for Music (1998). FULL BIO >>>
Dobrinka Tabakova
Dobrinka Tabakova is a British/Bulgarian composer who has been receiving increasing international recognition for her work. She graduated from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and in 2007 was awarded a doctorate in composition from King's College London. She has worked with some of today's leading musicians, orchestras and choirs including Janine Jansen, Maxim Rysanov, Gidon Kremer, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, St. Paul's Cathedral Choir and John Scott, Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Kamer Choir and Maris Sirmais, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and others. This year the Winners' Concert will take place at the
historic Church of the Ascension, Fifth Avenue at Tenth
Street, in New York City, as part of the
Inaugural Concerts celebrating a spectacular new organ
at the church built by Pascal Quoirin of St. Didier, France.
The winning compositions will be performed by the world
famous Voices of Ascension, conducted by Dennis Keene,
as part of their 2010-2011 subscription series.
The landmark church is the home base of the Voices of
Ascension, and is nationally known for its
extraordinary acoustics.
The Sorel Organization is proud to invite the 2008 1st place winner of their Medallion program, Chia-Yu Hsu, to premiere her new solo organ commissioning, 5 Essences,
on the new Quoirin instrument. 'This initiative is to make certain that The Sorel Organizations' support will last much longer than one contest." quotes Judy Cope, their
executive director. Also on the program will be Zoltan Kodaly's Missa Brevis for 40 voice choir and organ accompaniment.

Soprano Tami Petty wins the first
"Sorel Emerging Artist Award"
The Sorel Organization is proud to announce a revolutionary
new program. "The Sorel Emerging Artist Award" has been
designed to give gifted artists the opportunity to perform
in major halls with the exposure of a world wide audience.
For the next calendar year the foundation will approach
arts organizations and offer to cover their soloist fee
by programming our Emerging Artist.
This year the first recipient of "The Sorel Emerging Artist
Award" is soprano Tami Petty. We feel certain that you
will agree that she deserves a place with the established
artists of her day. By unanimous board decision and support
from her colleagues, The Sorel Organization presents
soprano Tami Petty as its first Emerging Artist.
2nd annual "Medallion in Collaborative Piano" Winners Announced
The Sorel Organization is happy to present its's 2nd annual
"Medallion in Collaborative Piano" Winners Concert on March
22nd 2010. Rossini's Petite Solennelle will be performed in
its original form for 2 pianists on 2 instruments with
harmonium. The winners are Kana Mimaki and Anna Shelest.

Bora Yoon wins
2009 Recording Grant
The Sorel Organization proudly announces their 2009
Recording Grant recipient, Bora Yoon. Ms Yoon's recording
entitled, "Sunken Cathedral" traces human devotional and
transcendental properties of medieval music, in new music
today.

Congratulations to all the semi-finalists. Due to the high
quality of submissions we increased the amount of entries
to semi-finals to 13. You are all eligible to apply for
the Recording grant in 2013. All projects should be
submitted to the Sorel Organization during the calendar
year 2012.

The Sorel Organization in an effort to be more committed to
creating opportunity has collaborated with Alexander &
Buono Competitions for it's selection process in piano and
piano collaboration.

Claudette Sorel |
The Elizabeth & Michel Sorel Charitable Organization Inc., established in 1996 by their daughter, Claudette Sorel, is a 501©(3) private foundation. Ms. Sorel was a child piano prodigy. She is the youngest graduate of The Juilliard School completing her degree at age 9. She became a distinguished professor of piano, at SUNY, Fredonia. Ms. Sorel passed away in 1999. Our mission is to keep musical excellence alive and to help stretch the boundaries for women in music.
